The Pitfalls of Child Modeling
13.08.2019 14:07

All parents think their child is the most beautiful and angelic that ever existed - it's only natural. But if you are thinking of trying you child as a model, you need to make sure you're clued up in order to avoid the pit falls. We at Child Actor LA will describe some of the common pitfalls and how to avoid them.

Thinking it's all about looks

Even with adult models, looks aren't as important as you might think. Of course, they are very important, but they are not the be all and end all. There are millions of people beautiful enough to be a model, and a large proportion of beauty is in the eye of the beholder anyway. What's equally important is attitude and personality.

This is especially true for child models. Most children are appealing to adult eyes, so when it comes to modeling, it's far more important for the child to have a sunny personality, lots of big smiles and be excited, enthusiastic and have a zest for life. An attractive child that hates the studio, pouts and spends the whole time trying to escape is not going to make for a successful shoot.

Doing it for money

Some people think that getting their child to do some modeling is a good way to make some money - but this is the wrong reason to move into the industry. Parents should try child modeling if it suits their child and the child enjoys the experience. It can be great for bonding, character building and having new experiences. Going to new places, meeting new people and working with a professional but fun attitude can be valuable personal growth for children, and set them up well for the future. Pursuing child modeling simply for monetary reasons is more likely to lead to pressure, and therefore unnecessary stress.

Thinking it will be easy to crack

There is a very fast turnover of child models as they move into the next age bracket, and models of all ages are needed - from new-born to baby to toddler and so on. But that doesn't mean it'll be easy. There is a lot of competition for child modeling work. That's not to discourage you - just keep in mind that rejection is an inevitable part of this industry and be prepared to keep going and not take it personally. Or, if you think you might be sensitive to your child not getting a call back from a casting, it may not be the industry for you. There are many scammers out there too, read Child Actor LA scam prevention advice to avoid them.
